and in and out of weeks

and almost over a year

to where the wild things are.

Harun Farocki - one of my biggest film theory/video art heroes - gave a spectacular lecture at the Berlinale today.

Favourite quote: “it’s easy to make fun of doors in cinema. With windows it’s a little bit more difficult.”

I have just returned home from watching one of the greatest sports films I have ever seen, and that film is called Senna.

I left the cinema one hour ago and I’m still reeling - my heart is racing, my eyes are full of tears.

This is a majestic piece of work, and frankly I can’t tell you if I’m so full of emotion because of the quality of the film-making (an incredible exercise in editing and narrative construction) or its extraordinary subject matter. It’s probably the perfect symbiosis of both.

Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life - Trailer HD

Terrence Malick is the saffron of cinema: a pinch of his work is more precious and rare than pure gold; a pinch of it turns everything into its colour.

I can’t wait for The Tree of Life.

Not that (much like winning an Oscar) being inducted into the Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame is actually any kind of real indicator of a musician’s worth and importance, but hey, happy Tom Waits Wednesday, Hall of Fame edition
