Walking around the Mission today we crossed paths with Patricia Dolores and her pet human at the Pirate Supply Store (a relative of Brooklyn’s Superhero Supply Company).

Pirate rules say parrots must be parked outside - a disgrace for a city so well-known for its support of equal rights for all! But given P.D. Bird’s celebrity status, she was allowed inside for a little while to take a peek at the store’s excellent range of planks, effective remedies for scurvy, and replacement limbs of all kinds (with or without tattoos). Arrr.

The Brooklyn Superhero Supply Company  (more here and especially here) is a branch of 826NYC  - ”a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6-18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Our services are structured around our belief that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success. With this in mind we provide drop-in tutoring, field trips, after-school workshops, in-schools tutoring, help for English language learners, and assistance with student publications. All of our free programs are challenging and enjoyable, and ultimately strengthen each student’s power to express ideas effectively, creatively, confidently, and in his or her individual voice.”

Another TED talk about children’s creativity, This is from Dave Eggers. I heard about this project through Jarvis Cocker’s radio program and coincidently I bought a postcard with Dave Egger’s work on it. Or well I just looked at a postcard I bought one the grounds I like the pretty typography.Anyway, this seems to me to be a wonderful idea.

So many good things in this post I don’t know where to begin.
