Let us consider the ways in which armadillos are actually the inspiration behind the world of Twilight. Armadillos are nocturnal, insectivore/vegetarian, shape-shifting creatures with the “skin of a killer”. They can jump straight in the air up to 1.20m (that’s around 6ft). They are doing all they can not to fuck up your SUV with the power of their shells. Although they normally take forever to cross the street, they can actually move really fast, but they have to hide their superpowers from humans who would just happily stake them in the heart and make burritos out of their flesh.

I will go as far as to say that, in many ways, our scaly friends are better than the vapid vampires created by Ms Meyer: dillos won’t throw a hissy fit if you tell them you won’t be staying for dinner, and they won’t cheat at baseball.

Besides, taxidermy is a valid reason for having only one facial expression.

The armadillo in the picture - we’ll name him Sebastian - appears here in a cameo role, a gesture to acknowledge armadillos’ significant contribution to the success of Twilight. Sadly though, the mistreatment of this most important breed continues, as Sebastian is the victim of one of several continuity errors in the film: the second time -grunt-Bella and -oh-ravish-me-Edward sit next to each other in the biology lab, Sebastian spontaneously disappears and reappears again from one shot to the next. Maybe he just needed to go and get several shots of tequila to get through the movie. I know I did.

Sebastian was, totally, like, the star of the movie and I hope he gets his own little spin-off saga set in Texas, with loads of flashback to prehistoric times, and loads of armadillo clans fighting ant-eaters and aardvarks.
