Film log 2010 #33 - Das Weisse Band (dir. Michael Haneke, 2009) (image via missvengeance)
Hands down, for me this was the best film of 2009. On second viewing, it may just be the best film of the past decade. Every single frame, sound, word, light - and face, hand, field, tree, bird, horse, stone, hat, book, door, sigh - in this film is perfect: accurately, severely, magnificently fulfilling its specific narrative, aesthetic, moral, and emotional duty. It’s a complex, hard, rigorous piece of work, and it is an absolute masterpiece. Like all momentous art, its enjoyment cannot but produce pleasure and discomfort in equal measure. Wunderbar.
