Do you think you would dislike the film as much if you hadn’t read the book? I never did and I’m curious to see it, in spite of some negative reviews it’s been getting.

Yes, I would! It’s really shallow. If I hadn’t read the book I’d be wondering what all the fuss is about, given that the story is so trite and flimsy. I know you’re smarter than that, but really I’d recommend reading the book over watching this film to anybody. It’s not by accident that it’s such an enduring classic. (And it’s easier to read than War & Peace!)
