The Mets (48-51) defeated the D-Backs (49-50) by the score of 3-1 tonight in Arizona.
The Least You Should Know:Mets RHP prospect Matt Harvey made his big-league debut and let up no runs in 5.1 innings of work, while striking out 11 and walking three.
Harvey’s 11 strike outs are the most for a Mets pitcher in his big-league debut.
Scott Hairston doubled to right field in the top of the first inning to give the Mets a quick and early 2-0 lead. Rob Johnson later knocked in a run on a sacrifice fly.
Bobby Parnell walked the lead-off hitter in the ninth, plus another later in the inning, which got the potential winning run to the plate. However, despite facing five batters in the inning, he wiggled through it to close out the win.

Matthew Cerrone: Tonight was all about Harvey, who looked incredibly comfortable and confident in his big-league debut. I am most impressed with how he stuck to a plan and seemed to totally stay within himself, especially considering the team’s free-fall entering the game and all the hype surrounding his debut. I give credit here to Johnson, who was his catcher in Triple-A and who was promoted specifically to be his catcher tonight. Also, I’m sure it was a HUGE help taking the hill for the first time ever, already staked to a 2-0 lead. Harvey had terrific command of his fastball and got swings and misses with his breaking stuff, which is what everyone pointed to when criticizing his work in Triple-A. Lastly, I loved how serious he looked on the mound. He was focused and looked like he had been doing this for 10 years…
The Mets and D-Backs play again tomorrow night at 9:40 pm ET, with Jon Niese (7-4, 3.59 ERA) taking on Josh Collmenter (2-2, 3.82 ERA).
