Judi Dench voted the greatest stage actor of all... →
Maggie Smith coming second, Mark Rylance third and Ian McKellen fourth. After that came Olivier, Scofield and Gielgud with Michael Gambon eighth and Vanessa Redgrave ninth. Richardson, who died in 1983, came 10th.
I have three responses (ok, four):
1. Mark, well done. (I was saying that in 1997.)
2. I’m curious as to how many of these actors the people who were polled actually saw on...

then I can put on my clothes I guess, and walk the streets.
2 I love you. I love you, but I’m turning to my verses and my heart is closing like a fist.
Words! be sick as I am sick, swoon, roll back...

Broken china bodes ill. I accidentally knocked over my favourite teapot this morning, and it smashed into five large pieces. We tried to glue it back together, but alas, poor teapot: I baptize thee Humpty Dumpty, rest in peace.
The day went on along these lines, with much clumsy smashing of delicate items and unsuccessful attempts to put broken things back together again.

Cheers Colin, I bet you they’re shitting themselves now.
